The character was written to have two settings with no real variation or nuance in how she acted. Mary had the weakest characterization in my opinion. For Ian, his character was just difficult for me to relate to and while he experienced growth, it didn’t feel like much occurred. I didn’t connect as much with Ian or Mary. I liked Edwina as a character and watching her growth and progress was engaging to me. The characters in this book were hit or miss for me. The magic system shown on the page is much more complex and complicated than it appears on the surface and that makes for an interesting story, especially when combined with a “whodunnit” plot. The magic itself wasn’t delved into terribly deeply, which allowed some aspects of the plot to remain surprising and mysterious, but I was impressed not only by how the magic system was used, but also how varied it ended up being. The magic system in this book was pretty engaging. It made some revelations have a smaller impact, but it didn’t change my enjoyment of the story. There were a few areas where the author showed her hand a bit too much, but it was less telling me “here’s what happens next” and more “this is something you need to pay attention to”. The author did an excellent job with the foreshadowing and with providing small hints without giving too much away in terms of the overall plot. I did predict some of the twists and turns that the plot took, but at no point in reading the novel was I absolutely sure how the story would end. At the core of the story is the mystery about what happened to Ian and as the story progresses, the plot becomes more complex as additional elements are introduced. This book perfectly balances detective fiction with fantasy elements. One of this novel’s biggest strengths is the mystery aspect.

But as their secret is slowly unveiled, a dangerous mystery emerges on the darkened streets of London. To retrieve his lost memories, Ian demands answers from Edwina and Mary Blackwood, sister witches with a murky past. Among his effects: a bloodstained business card bearing the name of a master wizard and a curious pocket watch that doesn’t seem to tell time.
